Don’t Let Energy Savings Fly Out The Front Door

You’re front door does a great job of controlling who you allow to enter and exit your home, but is it also causing hot or cold air to pass through too? If you’ve noticed a spike in your heating or cooling bills, your front door might just be the culprit. Here’s some easy ways to make sure the entrance to your home is more energy efficient and help to lower your monthly utility costs.

Are your doors energy efficient?

  • Weather Stripping: Chances are, you don’t even realize that there is weather stripping along your doorframe until it becomes worn or damaged. The best way to tell if yours is problematic is by touch or feel. During winter, you will be able to feel cold spots on the perimeter of your door that indicate where your weather stripping is failing. Sometimes you can see these areas because the weather stripping is no longer attached to the frame properly or light is coming in from around the edge of the door. Weather stripping replacement is a simple do-it-yourself project and kits can be purchased at your local home improvement center.

  • Door repair: If you have determined that the weather stripping is not your issue, you may need to repair your door. As your house settles, the door may no longer fit in the frame properly causing gaps to occur. One sure sign of this is if your door sticks or squeaks when you use it. Try cleaning all dirt and debris from the hinges and tighten up any lose screws. Many times these steps will pull the door back into proper alignment.

  • Caulking: The outside of your doorframe should have a waterproof seal known as caulking. Over time, the caulking material can decay and will need to be removed and replaced. One tube of caulk is more than enough to create a fresh new seal.
