Patio Door Choices
Your patio door can be a very important decision. You want a door that complements the interior and exterior of your home and is secure yet easy to open. There are also numerous styles to choose from plus the option of colors, materials, and more. The more you learn about patio doors, the better prepared you will be to make a decision.
Sliding Patio Doors
The most common patio doors are probably sliding ones, which may also be referred to as bypass or gliding doors. They will let in a great deal of natural light and have at least two individual panes that can slide back and forth to open.
Folding Patio Doors
Just like they sound, folding patio doors open up accordion style, with each section sliding along on a track and then folding away completely. You can find a folding patio door with anywhere between two and eight leaves.
Swinging Patio Doors
Finally, swinging or hinged patio doors work just like any other interior or exterior door. In most cases, however, they will have a full view of glass and may be double doors with hinges at the side jambs like French doors or hinges in the center to open like butterfly wings.
Once you have chosen the style of patio door you want for your home, you will still need to choose a material. There are an incredible number of options, including wood, wood that is clad in metal, vinyl, steel, aluminum, and fiberglass. Fiberglass is among the most popular options for its ability to withstand all climates and mimic the appearance of genuine wood. Aluminum is highly affordable, as is steel. Vinyl is great for its energy efficiency and durability while wood has a natural sturdiness and an upscale feel. Of course, you will also want to think about what color you want your patio door to be and which shades are available with each material.
